Pictures illustrate the challenges caused by heavy rain and wind

This week, heavy winds and rain produced a variety of road hazards for drivers. The biggest challenges come from rain-soaked hillsides causing new slides or aggravating old slides.

We have landslides, also known as debris flows, taking place in areas of the state accustomed to slides including the Columbia River Gorge, rivers along the Coast Range and in the Cascades.

We’ve put together some photos and video that help tell the story of what emergency responders, local public works agencies and others are facing as they work on assessment and clean-up.

Events like this highlight the coordination, communication and collaboration that takes place on a daily basis with our partners. Every discipline is involved, and their efforts are much appreciated.

Slide and erosion threats will continue and may increase as wet weather continues. Be alert and use caution. Visit TripCheck.com for the latest road conditions and closures before you head out.
