Lane County state highway construction update

The Oregon Department of Transportation is committed to providing a safe and efficient transportation system. ODOT invests in Oregon’s future through roadway improvement projects. The following are located in ODOT Region 2, Area/District 5, Lane County.

I-105 Bridge Preservation Project (Eugene)

The 6th Avenue off-ramp from westbound I-105 is closed until July 19 to remove and replace concrete slabs, complete bridge rail replacement, replace bridge joints, and complete seismic reinforcement and paving.

Westbound and eastbound traffic lane restrictions change as bridge joint and bridge rail replacement continue.

Lane closures change as needed and crews are onsite day and night in the project area. Bridge rail removal and replacement continues in both directions.

In a two year project, I-105 bridges and ramps between the Delta Highway interchange and downtown Eugene are being repaired, repaved, and receiving seismic upgrades. Doug Kirk, Assistant Resident Engineer, (541)744-8080

US 101: Siuslaw River Bridge (Florence) (MP 190.8 -191.2)

Crews are completing final touch up work.

The Siuslaw River Bridge is located at the south end of Florence on U.S. 101. Repairs have been made to the bridge and its protective coating, seismic upgrades added, the railing upgraded, and pedestrian access improved.

OR 126/U.S. 101: Florence Streetscape and Paving Project (Florence)

No work is expected Thursday or Friday, July 4-5.

Expect day work on U.S. 101 between U.S. 101/OR126 Jct and the Siuslaw River Bridge. Crews are clearing and prepping subgrade on northbound U.S. 101 starting at Old Town Way and working north. Expect single lane closures on northbound U.S. 101 and side street closures. Crews are finishing sidewalk and ADA improvements on southbound U.S. 101.

Crews will begin work on sidewalk improvements at Rhododendron the week of July 8, working north and south of the intersection.

This project is a partnership with the City of Florence to improve the streetscape and pave. ADA facilities along U.S.101 will also be improved.

The project includes:

  • Work along U.S.101 –south from the U.S.101/OR 126 Junction to the Siuslaw River Bridge & OR 126 –east from the U.S. 101/OR 126 Junction to Spruce Street
  • ADA ramps, colored concrete plazas, art plinths, street lighting, underground overhead utilities, bike lanes, parking spaces along U.S. 101, and landscaping and irrigation improvements.
  • U.S. 101 paving from the U.S.101/OR 126 Junction south to the Siuslaw River Bridge.

The project is to be completed by the end of October.

U.S. 101: Neahkahnie Mountain (Chasm) to Cape Creek Bridge

This project includes work on three bridges along U.S. 101:

  • Neahkahnie Mtn (Chasm) (North of Manzanita): A rockfall fence to prevent rocks and debris from falling onto the highway was installed and bridge repair work completed. Completed: May 2019
  • Cape Perpetua Half Viaduct (South of Yachats): A new cathodic protection system is being installed, including installing a wind turbine generator under the bridge to power the system. Crews are fabricating the walkway platform underneath the bridge.
  • Cape Creek Bridge (North of Florence): Installation of a new cathodic protection system and bridge repairs are underway. Crews are working on surface prep of the concrete, which will be followed by bridge repair work and the protective coating installation. Single lane closures for some of the work.

All three bridges are to be completed by the end of December 2020.

OR126: Cornerstone Dr. to Terry St. Paving Project

Crews continue working nights on the two bus pullouts near Ellmaker for the next several weeks. One lane is closed Sunday through Thursday nights from 7 p.m. to 6 a.m.  

Crews are repairing and repaving the roadway, adding two bus pullouts and a westbound right turn lane at Ellmaker Road, widening the north shoulder between Shady Rest Dr. and Lake Side Dr., replacing bridge rail at MP 51.7, installing new guardrail, and installing centerline and edge line rumble strips.

This project is scheduled to be complete by September 16.

OR 126: Walker Creek – Chickahominy Creek Passing Lane Most construction activities are suspended until August, at which point 24-hour flagging will be needed to install a large culvert and finish paving. There may be intermittent work during this time with minimal impacts to traffic.

A westbound passing lane is being installed from mp 32.36 to mp 31.56, just west of Walton. The road is being widened on both sides to make room for the additional lane. The project also includes new pavement, signs, striping, guardrail, and water quality features.

OR 58: Rock Fall Remediation (MP 54.2)
Work is complete for the season. The project will resume after the bird nesting season. Tree falling and screen installation begins in the fall.

This project removes loose material (scaling) from a rock face where there has been a high amount of rock fall. A screen is being installed to mitigate future rock fall.
