Focus on safety for 4th of July

Impaired driving ad

Impaired driving adDid you know that the 4th of July is Oregon’s deadliest of the major holidays for traffic-related fatalities? The combination of hot weather, late night fireworks, celebratory gatherings and volumes of folks out and about and it’s not surprising that impaired driving increases this time of year.

What can we do?

Here at ODOT we join with Oregon State Police, local law enforcement and other safety partners on the “Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over” campaign. We dedicate resources for extra patrols and extra outreach.

America’s Independence Day is about freedom. But freedom comes with responsibilities. When you get behind the wheel, you are not only responsible for your own safety, but also for the safety of those who ride with you and share the road with you. Safe driving begins with buckling up, being attentive, and never, ever getting behind the wheel if you have been drinking or are impaired.

Every traveling person – bicyclists, pedestrians, motorcyclists and motorists alike – has responsibility for keeping our roads safe. All travelers are encouraged to immediately report aggressive, dangerous and intoxicated drivers to 9-1-1 or call OSP at 1-800-24DRUNK (800-243-7865).
